PC Racing and Driving Games

It is amazing that I don't own a console for video games at the moment while I owned many over the years with my first being the Intellivision so most if any of the games that I do play are on my PC which works out pretty good as a gaming system.

Briefly I will run down some of the driving and racing games that I have played include:  Midnight Club II, Muscle Car 3, Juiced, Need for Speed Series including Underground 1 and 2 plus Driver, Driv3r, Interstate '76 and various other games.  Some of them are better to simulate driving than others but all in all I prefer games that allow for the fun factor rather than having all this realism.  I don't really care for the NASCAR series games so I usually avoid them.  Too bad the good ones are coming out on the consoles and not enough for the PC.  And if you want a PC one, you need a pretty powerful rig.  Mine is ancient now unfortunately so I have to rely on finding older games.

Games that offer good keyboard control include Midnight Club II, NFS Underground 1 and 2, Interstate '76 (once you learn all the keys), Juiced, Ford Racing 3, etc. but watch out for Flatout! as the cars are rather floaty.  Flatout 2 is much better and Crashday is downright fun!  Test Drive (2002) is a great game once you get the hang of it.

The main downside with most of these PC driving / racing games is that they get hard to find after a year or two with releases for the newer and more powerful computer systems out there compared to consoles.  I wish I would have kept all the ones I had for safe keeping and the ones listed here.  Sometimes it is nice to go back and replay some of them to see if you could do better or just revisit the game.  I am deciding to hold onto some unless I have to upgrade to a better computer system.  Luckily I was able to find some old stock online to get a few of the games back to play again.

Personal Picks - Driving / Racing Simulation Games for the PC:

CrashDay

This is a cross between Flatout, TrackMania and some of Interstate '76.  While many will tire of the game since it is pretty easy to get through career mode but they do allow for many choices.  I would have to say that the controls aren't half bad and they don't let you get away with much here except for a few things you can crash through or your car is toast.  My wish since playing Electronic Arts Racing Destruction Set back in the Commodore 64 days:  a workable adjustable variable track editor in a current PC driving game.  Yes, this includes (while not perfect) a good enough to use track editor to create your own tracks for racing, bashing, car battles, bomb runs, etc.  The closet you'll get to a remake of Racing Destruction Set for the PC except for the split-screen mode and other minor tidbits.

A great game which gives you racing, car battles, stunt shows and more like bomb runs, pass the flag, etc.  It could have been more refined but hey for the price you can't go wrong.  It isn't perfect but I was able to make a decent race track with some practice with the editor and with the different options you can create a vast variety of courses.  The cars and trucks aren't licensed but they do look similar to certain old and new cars so you get a wide range from a 4x4 pickup to common cars to exotics plus the addition of mini-guns and missiles!

Flatout 2

I've been playing this ever since I got it.  Luckily it was on sale and I didn't have to pay the high initial release price since I was weary from the problems of the original Flatout game.  I thought this was going to be like the original but with new tracks and cars - WRONG!  Don't bother with the first one, this one is the version to buy because you don't stop on a dime when you hit tires, trees, cars, poles, etc.  Ok, maybe buildings and concrete walls, some larger trees but this time around they did the smash 'em and race 'em derby style right on the money.  You have more series, more tracks, more cars, more upgrades, more everything plus they improved the arcade driving 110%.  Way to go!!!

Ford Bold Moves Street Racing

On the heals of the hot Ford Racing 3, we get Ford Street Racing.  This game takes you to various tracks and the streets including a new computerized team racing feature and other goodies including a variety of Ford Motor Company vehicles.  The vehicles now receive damage so you just can't bash your way through the race depending on which type of game you play.  Problem is that you can be damaged and still go as fast as before.  This game is ok in the long run but I prefer Ford Racing 3 over it since you can race more variety of vehicles, tracks, races, etc.

Need for Speed Series!

I highly recommend this PC game if you are interested in running from the cops and dodging road blocks plus doing the standard races such as circuits, sprints, drag races, etc. but gone from this version are the tuner features and night street racing but replacing it is the cop chases and other previous NFS stand-bys.  No trucks or SUVs are included in this NFS MW release but you do get some Police SUVs chasing after you along with standard full size cop cars, two door pursuit cars, custom Corvette style pursuit vehicles, a helicopter and light to heavy duty SUVs.  I completed the career mode on this game and did most of the challenges but after many challenges it was time to put this one to rest.  So I got my BMW M3 GTR back and if I check through the car listing I should be able to choose any car for custom races and customizing, etc.  I did get the 1968 Camaro which I drove in the Burger King Challenge and won without trouble :) but it looks like you have to complete 100% of the challenges and career mode to use the car.

I should add that you do get to drive other vehicles in the "Challenges" part of the game including a generic full-size pick-up truck, minivan with NOS, garbage trucks and other vehicles.  These challenges keep getting harder and harder plus more frustrating as they go on but it is a way to keep the game interesting once you finish the career part.  They are also good if you are working on the career section and wish for something different as a break from the action.

UPDATE:  The problem with most of these PC games is that they get hard to find even the regular version of this game from the Need for Speed series.  I wish I would have kept mine and the others listed here that I played through and then got tired with.

The Other Driving / Racing Sims:

They include:  LA Street Racing, Street Racing Syndicate, City Racer, Midnight Outlaw 6 Hours to Sun Up, Test Drive, Juiced!, etc.

The key to playing these games is fun.  I've maybe went anywhere from 75% to 97% through on some and tried again just to get to the same point.  I just don't let the game frustrate me so I just put that one away and move onto to another.  Yes, the AI cars and tracks do have to be challenging but I like my driving / racing games to not be stressful since games are supposed to be fun and in my opinion.
